Please don't forget about the clubs you will swing the most times during a round - your wedges - they deserve attention!

The scoop on wedges.  Unfortunately in the golf industry, when you purchase a set of irons they usually include 3-PW (pitching wedge), in some rare instances they might also include a SW (sand wedge).  In the good old days, a 3-PW set would have pretty much did the trick for you - all clubs in the set had a 4° differential between the lofts from club to club.  The golf industry has slowly been sneaking back the lofts of each club in the set (to make them "longer" - yeah it feels good to smack a 7-iron 170 yards, but really it's more like hitting a 6 or 5 iron from yester-year).  Years ago, the PW (Pitching Wedge) had a loft of about 52° - now it is not uncommon to see a PW with a loft of 44 - 46° (I've even seen some of 'em down at 43°)........ TOO DAMN STRONG!  Today's PW is pretty much the equivalent of yester-year's 8 or 9-iron - yup, it's true - and today's 3-iron is equivalent to yester-year's 2-iron.

Due to the "vanishing loft" by the OEM's, golfers realized that there was a fairly large "gap" between the PW and the SW (like about a 10° or 12° "gap" - pretty substantial).  The golf industry introduced the answer to the "gap" - that's where the GW (or Gap Wedge) came into the picture.  The GW is usually around 52° and fills the large void that exists between today's PW and SW.  Many players also carry a more lofted wedge than the SW, it is called a Lob Wedge (LW) and is usually around 60° of loft.  Some even carry an extra-lofted wedge (XW) which is 64°.  I carry 4 wedges in my bag, a PW (48°), GW (52°), SW (56°), and an LW (60°).  If you're serious about scoring better in the game of golf, you absolutely NEED to have more than just a PW in your bag.  As mentioned elsewhere on this site, 60-70% of your strokes in a round of golf will come from 100 yards and closer to the hole.  Having more of these "scoring" clubs in your bag (and using them properly) will give you more useable shots within the "scoring range" (100-ish yards and in).  The result of this will help to reduce the number of shots that occur within this "scoring" range - which can have a rather large impact on your scoring.  If you need proof, I strongly suggest you read the book called "Dave Pelz' Short Game Bible".  Mr. Pelz is a former NASA scientist, he takes a very scientific approach to the short game, and can prove not only the direct relationship between the short game and your scores, but also how to smarten your short game up.  Of course, practice will be involved if you want to improve, but make sure it is practice with purpose - don't just go out there and practice your mistakes.  You have to know exactly WHAT to practice, HOW to practice, and how to get direct real-time feedback from your practice.  Your potential to score well in the game of golf is DIRECTLY related to the state of your short game.  If you don't believe me, the next time you're out for a round, count how many shots you take from 120 yards and closer (including putts) - figure your short game shots out as a percentage of your total strokes - you'll be surprised!  How many of those shots were "preventable"????  That's all I'm going to say about that.

How's your wedge grooves?  Have a peek at my babble on the Babblin' page about wedge grooves.  When you have a close look at the wedge grooves (done at 200X through a USB microscope), it might open your eyes.  It might be time to either have your wedges re-grooved (I have a special tool for that), or if they're too far gone it might be time to replace them.

Swing Science Wedges:

Swing Science "S" and "T" Series

Our new WEDGE SERIES was designed to enhance wedge play with a special emphasis on creating the right launch conditions for a given golfer. The new "S" Wedge was created for players looking for a traditional ball flight from a scoring wedge while the new "T" Wedge features a higher CG for creating a lower “tour” launch. Both wedges exhibit CNC Milling on the back cavity as well as the perimeter of the clubhead. Ideal from the rough, sand and fairway, these are extremely versatile wedges that play as great as they look!  I have a set of these babies for my own personal use.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Both wedges use 304 Stainless Steel for soft feel and adjustability.
  • CNC back cavity to position CG to better control launch condition of wedge.
  • T Wedge has a deeper cavity and slightly longer hosel to raise CG for lower launch angle.
  • CNC Face and grooves.
  • CNC top line.

Available 52°, 56°, and 60° "S" and "T" in RH.  LH lofts available in "T" wedge only.

Miura Golf FORGED Wedges:

Miura FORGED RH Wedges:

Features

  • Feel, feedback and workability of a forged blade.

Miura's forging techniques rearrange the molecular structure of the mild steel in a pattern that is uniform throughout the hitting area of the club in a manner that is unique to his clubs.  This tightness in the grain structure of the metal is what gives Miura made clubs the controlled, soft feel that other manufacturers cannot achieve.

Miura also uses a proprietary “spin welding” process to produce the industries’ most consistent hosel. This unique procedure ensures that the bore depths and hosel heights are identical on every Miura made head and the shaft of every club will be perfectly centered.

    Available 50°, 52°, 54°, 56°, 58°, and 60° in RH.

    Alpha Golf Wedges:

    PF-2 FORGED Wedge

What makes the Alpha PF-2 Wedges perform is the amount of spin generated.  No other wedge comes close to the amount of backspin produced.  Spin, and not bounce angle or ball trajectory, is the most important factor in wedge performance.  Backspin allows for soft landings and exceptional control and accuracy.  The secret to spin lies in the special groove designs on the Alpha PF-2 face:  the patented “90 Reverse Mill”.

Before the grooves are engraved, wedges go through a CNC-milling process.  Milling makes the face extremely flat and smooth, which is needed for highly accurate clubs like putters and wedges.  Alpha goes one step further.  After milling the wedge, 90 tiny circular grooves are carefully embedded in the face.  This extra "reverse-milling" step in the manufacturing process is a patent-pending technique to impart even more friction on the ball.  With the naked eye, you can actually count the 90 circular grooves on the face.  The circular grooves, along with the horizontal grooves, make wedge shots highly accurate and landings exceptionally soft.  No other wedge goes through such a rigorous manufacturing process for the purpose of increasing the spin rate.

    Technology Features

    • 90 Reverse mill face achieves 100% more spin for greater accuracy

    • Custom ground back-cut sole reduces drag

    • “Light silk” finish for less glare and easy set up

    • CNC milled grooves and entire face for accuracy

    • Double forged from 1020 “Low Carbon" steel for softness and durability

Available RH only in 52°, 56°, or 60°.

    PF-2C Cast Wedge

Many of the fine PF-2 features are built into the PF-2C wedge. The PF-2C has traditional wedge grooves (missing the circular milled grooves).  For a cast wedge, these things are soft soft soft.  Many claim they feel softer than a forged wedge.

    Available RH 52°, 56°, 60° and LH 52°, 56°, 60°
